Backup File Deletions not Working
We configured a backup job in the database maintenance plan for a database
for both "Complete Backup" and the "Transaction Log". We told the job to
delete files after one day. It has not been deleting these files, though.
Why is that?
John
Hi
Files are deleted after the next backup completes successfully.
If you se a backup to delete after 1 day, and you don't run the actual
backup job for 2 days, the backup will remain on disk for 2 days, until
after the backup is successful.

find this error anywhere:
BACKUP failed to complete the command master.dbo.sp_sqlexec;1
Does anyone have any insight into this error?
Thank You!How do you execute the backup? For troubleshooting purposes, try executing a

The job output of a job step in the job?
If you are uncertain, define a different output file for each jobstep and se
e exactly which jobstep
this message is from. Then post the TSQL commands you have in that jobstep.
I'm asking because the
error you posted doesn't look like an error that the BACKUP command would pr

BACKUP failed to complete the command sp_prepexec;1
One of my SQL Servers (SQL 2000 SP4) is reporting this error in the Maintenance Plan. But shortly after it shows this error is does successfully backup my Databases (per log history), however the plan is indicating "failure".
I have no idea how to resolve this nor why it is happening.

Hi,
it seems, that an t-sql statement is blocking.
Use the profiler and filter by object name = sp_prepexec and SPID.

During a database backup the message of "BACKUP failed to complete the
command sp_execute;1" appears in the SQL log. The backup seems to complete
sucessful. The backup command is as follow:
BACKUP DATABASE @.dbname TO DISK = \\ServerA\Backup\BackupXDB.dat WITH

Did you try to apply the differential backup to see if it's valid? Also, if
you run the same command from Query Analyzer, do you get the same error?

sqlBackup Failed to complete command SP_EXECUTESQL;1
in my event log I have the alarm Backup failed to complete command
sp_executesql;1
The point is that I didn't find any scheduled backup jobs and I didn't find
any *.bak file relative to the DB mentioned in the alarm. (I can see the DB
file name in the text window at the bottom of the detail in Windows event
log )
I suspect that it's hidden in a stored procedure or somewhere else. How can
I find it?
I have two DB on the system pointed by this alarm and they're quite large 20
& 25gig so if a backup file was create I think I wouldn't have difficulty
to find them.
I didn't find any infos on the net about this alarm so if someone can give
me some the help me to search deeper.

Is there any info in the event log that would give you any more info?
Did you have this issue prior to SP2?
Have you recently made any changes to the databases?
Are you using any 3rd party backup tools?

NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'EAGLE LOG BACKUP', NOSKIP , STATS = 10,

What do I need to change to get this backup completed?

Jacksonville, FLMy guess is that your file EAGLE LOG BACKUP already exists, and it is not a
sql backup file, and you are appending to it.
If so, taking out any one of those, you should be good.

Backup / Restore to a different server
seem to be working.
I am taking a seperate specific complete database backup to restore on
another maching for testing.
I'm backing up to a specific file and have the backup verified.
I copy to file to another machine without error.
I restore it on that machine without error.
Yet here is data that is not there.
What am I doing wrong?
Kyle! What you say is simply impossible. I would make sure you are connecting to
the correct servers for both the backup and restore process.

Was restoring an old backup. (Happened to be in a different directory but
have the same name.)
Thanks

Backup / Restore to a different server
seem to be working.
I am taking a seperate specific complete database backup to restore on
another maching for testing.
I'm backing up to a specific file and have the backup verified.
I copy to file to another machine without error.
I restore it on that machine without error.
Yet here is data that is not there.
What am I doing wrong?
Kyle!
What you say is simply impossible. I would make sure you are connecting to
the correct servers for both the backup and restore process.

|||How are you determining the data isn't there? Enterprise Mangler needs a
refresh before it will show newly restored databases. You may have
permission issues that are preventing your account from accessing particular
data within the database? Withoutknowing how you are accessing the data, I
really can't go any further.

Backup
Newbie question.
How do I have have a complete backup of a database for one weeks time frame
and the backups append to the file name the date it was backup up? Anything
after a week the oldest backup will be deleted. Thank you. There is nothing in SQL Server that does exactly that for you. You can
accomplish the same thing with a bit of TSQL programming. Just one thing:
you cannot delete parts of a backup file. When you do a backup, it is either
all or nothing (append or overwrite).

backing up to an external drive
About three weeks ago, I configured a "Complete Backup" and "Transaction Log
Backup" maintenance plan in SQL Server 2000 to funnel the .BAK and .TRN files
to an external drive attached to the server through a USB port. These plans
run between 10 and 11 PM weeknights.
I tested these two plans before I left the client, that afternoon. The
backups were successful and I have reports that proved this.
Now, I reviewed the client's server remotely just today and found that only
the transaction logs backed up that night (10PM). The database backups did
not backup. And, that was the last time that the logs backed up.
I am going to review the SQL log report in a little while. But, why would
backups to an external drive (a mapped "Q" drive) work upon testing but
apparently stop working in production? Other than reviewing the report, is
there anything that I can do to get these backups to work?
Can the database maintenance plans simply not backup to an external drive?
Thanks!

I'm confused. Is this an external drive or a mapped drive?
In any case, if it's external, make sure the drive letter hasn't been
changed.
If it's mapped, you're far better off using UNCs.

They can be. Bee there, done that.
