What's the best method to back up windows 2003 with 50 GB data on to an
external USB hard drive. The external hard drive size is 250 GB. Can we do
FULL back up and differential back up on to the same drive? The server with
RAID configuration has SQL server 2000 on it for now. I will be loading
exchange server on to it in few days. The client is ok with loosing weeks
worth of data (ofcourse RAID is there) .
GHOST ... etc., what type of back up and restore is best in my situation.
The second question is, on the above server the active directory is not set
up. This machine is part of a domain server running on Linux. All users
are authenicated on linux server. Can I install Windows Exchange server
2003 on to it? Any complications or pre reqs to do so.

Yes you can , I suggest you get some good backup software like arcserver.
While the Windows backup will work better recovery software is needed.

You should backup all databases before the windows backup runs, transaction
logs should be backed up every hour

Can I have this client they seem very easy to please. I hope the client is
OK in losing all perfromance out of the SQL box! SQL and exchanged are both
hogs and shouldn't rn on the same machine. Next you are gong to tell me you
run File/Print sharing and IIS as well!!

Archserver has a very good restore option, from CD or disk

I wouldn't have thought SQL Server runs of Linux are you using an emulation
package, if so you would already have perfromance problems :)

Suggestions, Get a big tape drive, while slower than DISK more flexible and
cheaper (TAPES vs DISK) you also get more backup/recover options and at the
end of the day what's the use of backing up if you can't restore.

Backing up to Colorado external tape
we've backed up SQL to a "regular" tape drive before, but now I am trying to
use a Colorado (Travan) external parallel port tape drive. Even though the
OS seems to see a tape there, I cannot mount it or make SQL see the tape.
Any ideas of what to do? Thanks.

Based on my experience, there is some known issue on certain Travan tape
devices. You may first try to call PSS to get the following hotfix to see
if it helps:
825742 Cannot Back Up Data to a Travan Tape Device Successfully
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825742
If the issue persists, it is advised that you contact manufacturer of the
device to get their support on this. Hope this is helpful.

Why don't you use SQL to backup the database to disk and then have your
backup program grab the backup file and copy it to the tape? I know it's an
"extra" step, but it's maybe easier than getting SQL server to recognize the
tape.

It seems RSM does not work properly. Can you run Ntbackup to backup OS
files? Did you once use a different tape properly.
You can check if it is listed in RSM device by the following method:
1. Right click My Computer->Manage->Storage->Removable Storage
2. Check if the tape is listed properly.
If not, you may contact the manufacturer if it is fully compatible with
Win2000. If so, you may want to use the following steps to rebuild RSM
database to test
1. Stop the RSM Service.
2. Delete the RSM databases located at %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData.
3. Restart the RSM Service, this will recreate new, empty RSM Databases.
As I mentioned, it is usually a hardware/driver related issue. I agree with
Steen because his workaround might be much easier at present.

Why don't you use SQL to backup the database to disk and then have your
backup program grab the backup file and copy it to the tape? I know it's an
"extra" step, but it's maybe easier than getting SQL server to recognize the
tape.

It seems RSM does not work properly. Can you run Ntbackup to backup OS
files? Did you once use a different tape properly.
You can check if it is listed in RSM device by the following method:
1. Right click My Computer->Manage->Storage->Removable Storage
2. Check if the tape is listed properly.
If not, you may contact the manufacturer if it is fully compatible with
Win2000. If so, you may want to use the following steps to rebuild RSM
database to test
1. Stop the RSM Service.
2. Delete the RSM databases located at %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData.
3. Restart the RSM Service, this will recreate new, empty RSM Databases.
As I mentioned, it is usually a hardware/driver related issue. I agree with
Steen because his workaround might be much easier at present.

Why don't you use SQL to backup the database to disk and then have your
backup program grab the backup file and copy it to the tape? I know it's an
"extra" step, but it's maybe easier than getting SQL server to recognize the
tape.

It seems RSM does not work properly. Can you run Ntbackup to backup OS
files? Did you once use a different tape properly.
You can check if it is listed in RSM device by the following method:
1. Right click My Computer->Manage->Storage->Removable Storage
2. Check if the tape is listed properly.
If not, you may contact the manufacturer if it is fully compatible with
Win2000. If so, you may want to use the following steps to rebuild RSM
database to test
1. Stop the RSM Service.
2. Delete the RSM databases located at %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData.
3. Restart the RSM Service, this will recreate new, empty RSM Databases.
As I mentioned, it is usually a hardware/driver related issue. I agree with
Steen because his workaround might be much easier at present.

Hello:
About three weeks ago, I configured a "Complete Backup" and "Transaction Log
Backup" maintenance plan in SQL Server 2000 to funnel the .BAK and .TRN files
to an external drive attached to the server through a USB port. These plans
run between 10 and 11 PM weeknights.
I tested these two plans before I left the client, that afternoon. The
backups were successful and I have reports that proved this.
Now, I reviewed the client's server remotely just today and found that only
the transaction logs backed up that night (10PM). The database backups did
not backup. And, that was the last time that the logs backed up.
I am going to review the SQL log report in a little while. But, why would
backups to an external drive (a mapped "Q" drive) work upon testing but
apparently stop working in production? Other than reviewing the report, is
there anything that I can do to get these backups to work?
Can the database maintenance plans simply not backup to an external drive?

I'm confused. Is this an external drive or a mapped drive?
In any case, if it's external, make sure the drive letter hasn't been
changed.
If it's mapped, you're far better off using UNCs.

Backup" maintenance plan in SQL Server 2000 to funnel the .BAK and .TRN file

to an external drive attached to the server through a USB port. These plans
run between 10 and 11 PM weeknights.
I tested these two plans before I left the client, that afternoon. The
backups were successful and I have reports that proved this.
Now, I reviewed the client's server remotely just today and found that only
the transaction logs backed up that night (10PM). The database backups did
not backup. And, that was the last time that the logs backed up.
I am going to review the SQL log report in a little while. But, why would
backups to an external drive (a mapped "Q" drive) work upon testing but
apparently stop working in production? Other than reviewing the report, is
there anything that I can do to get these backups to work?
Can the database maintenance plans simply not backup to an external drive?

I'm confused. Is this an external drive or a mapped drive?
In any case, if it's external, make sure the drive letter hasn't been
changed.
If it's mapped, you're far better off using UNCs.

Backing up to a Tape Drive
I am setting up a new SQL Server that has an external HP 920 SAS Ultrium tape drive attached to it via a p400 sas card.
I am running 2003 R2 x64 with 2005 SQL Server x64, and I am trying to set up my DB backup plan but for some reason I can't get SQL to recognize my tape drive, alhough it is listed in device manager.
Anyone have any thoughts? I'm kind of stumped.

What do you mean SQL Server doesn't recognise it?
It's not listed in the dropdown when you try to create a new backup device in SQL Server Management Studio.|||Sorry ... Yes when trying to add it as a new backup device in Management Studio.
Also I have SP2 installed.
|||Not sure - maybe there's a problem with the compatibility of the drive. I don't know if there might be a problem if the drive wasn't attached and switched on when SQL Server started up.
It is worth trying to run the SQL
EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'tape', 'DumpToTape', '\\.\tape0'
Assuming that it is the first tape device in the machine.

Backing up to a Tape Drive
I am setting up a new SQL Server that has an external HP 920 SAS Ultrium tape drive attached to it via a p400 sas card.
