Backup File Name

Dear all,

On scheduling the online backup for SQL server 2005 with SQL server management studio, how the backup filename can be automatically change for everyday. I mean the backup filename be automatically generated every day.

Thanks

Imran Hasware

You can take help of database maintenance plan in this case, where you can automatically set the filename to change.

Or else refer to the Tara's weblog http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ where she got very useful script that can used without any issues.

Dear Satya,

I tried Maintenance plan, but i am getting the following error:

backup database

Dear all,
I backup the master, msdb, and my database from sql server 2000 by the add a backup devices and backup all of these db into the backup devices..
Then it have one .bak file including the db's. Is it can restore by the sql server 2000 when i reinstall the windows server and sql 2000 server?
or can i restore it into a new hardware system with windows server and sql 2000server?
Hi;
This BAK file can be restored in the below scenarios:
1. Restore in the same SQL server with a different name.
2. Restore it in the SQL Server after installation of Windows and SQL Server
3. Restore it in a SQL server with the same database name in a new hardware
For all the above you can use "RESTORE database " command.
Note:
This BAK files can be used when there is a crash of database. Better copy
this BAK file to
a safe place preferably to a TAPE device.
Thanks

computer. The user always use to know the name of the database in order to
restore the database, can i make a backup to user without know the name of
the database to success to restore?Joe
I don't understand. Do you want to pass to BACKUP command a database name as
a parameter?

name you want. The user doesn't have to specify the original
name of the database that was backed up.
You can find samples of how to do this in books online under
the topic: How to restore a database with a new name
or check the following link:

|||William,
You don't need to purchase the third party open file, SQL
agents to do SQL Server backups. They aren't used that often
and are often problematic - it's more common to just use
SQL Server native backups and backup to disk. Enterprise
backup software or tape backups can then just backup the SQL
Server backup file that you create with the SQL Server
native backup. As others have pointed out, you just use
T-SQL backup commands, you can schedule these using SQL
Server Agent.

Server Agent.

you have to create backup script first and schedule it through sql job.
Schedule depends on your requirements and how much data you can afford to

Here is the very basic script

NOINIT,Name='myDBbackup'
differential
BACKUP DATABASE [myDB] TO DISK=N'c:\myDBbackup.bak' WITH

BACKUP LOG [myDB] TO DISK = N'c:\myDBbackup.bak' WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOA

Backing Up Transaction Logs

Dear sirs/ma'am

When setting up a maintenance plan in 2000, I can remove files older than 1 day.

When creating a maintenance task in 2005, I do not have that option (the database is in full mode). The only thing I can do (it seems) is to;

1. create a job with a step that uses a script from going through the motions of creating a log backup directly off the database. This is where I can say that the backup set will expire after 1 day, but in the destination field, the backup filename is hard-coded.

2. Then I schedule this script to run every hour. Sure enough, the log backup is overwritten due to the hard coded name.

The script reads;

BACKUP LOG [CSEPPWebCADB] TO DISK = N'D:\MSSQL\BACKUP\CSEPPWebCADB_backup.trn' WITH RETAINDAYS = 1, NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'WebCADB_backup', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10

How can I maintain a days worth of log backups or better yet, set up a maintenance plan to give me log backups every hour & delete them after they are a day old?

Sorry, I'm just not seeing how to do this.

Thanks for your help.

I don't believe that the person setting this up put SP 2 or the patch. I'll look into this and reply.

Thanks for your suggestion.

|||You need the correct SP2 loaded on your machine to start with. When you build a maintenance plan, you need to put in 2 tasks. One task is the backup database task. The second task is a clean up task. The clean up task is what removes the files older than X.|||

Backing up to a different server

Dear All,
We are running Standard Edition 2000 SP3a on a 2003 Server.
We would like to backup onto the disk of a different 2003
Server.
However under the "Use this directory" of the Database
Maintenance Plan, it does not give the share directory we
set up, and typing the location i.e. \\OtherServer\Backups
results in an error.
All accounts we have tried are domain accounts, and they
have access to the directory.
Can anyone tell me what I'm missing ?
Thanks

Sue the error was 'Directory was not found', and yes the

Can you ping the destination server from the source
server ? It may be a firewall issues e.t.c.
One of the best practice is to set the SQL Server service
and the SQL Server agent service be run by a domain
account. Make sure you include this domain account in
the 'Administrators' group of the both servers (You will
have to stop and restart the services). When you create
the maintenence plan, make the jobs owner this domain
account. But the most important thing is that make sure
you have connection between the two servers.

It is not a problem with the account, but seems to be a
problem with the Database Maintenance Plan.

getting and that makes a difference but...backing up across
the network isn't necessarily the best idea. You may want to
backup to a local drive and then copy the backup to whatever
location you want to keep these on the network.

from the database maintence plan.
Sue the error was 'Directory was not found', and yes the
directory was there and we do have access rights to the
directory. It seems that the database maintenance plan
will only allow you to save to the server SQL is running
on.

on to a backup server for ages.
Can you ping the destination server from the source
server ' It may be a firewall issues e.t.c.
One of the best practice is to set the SQL Server service
and the SQL Server agent service be run by a domain
account. Make sure you include this domain account in
the 'Administrators' group of the both servers (You will
have to stop and restart the services). When you create
the maintenence plan, make the jobs owner this domain
account. But the most important thing is that make sure
you have connection between the two servers.

using a unc path. In terms of who has access rights, it's
the SQL Server service account that needs rights. The
service account needs to be a domain account with
appropriate permissions to the other server, directory.

Backing up the SQL server 2000 database using tape drives

Dear sir/madam,

I am from NTU, Singapore and we have a windows 2003 server edition installed on a DELL server and it also runs MS SQL server 2000 for a project of ours. We have installed a HP tape drive on the dell server and it works fine if ntbackup is used at the command prompt but then the SQL enterprise manager does not recognize the tape drive and backing up of our database is of high priority as it contains sensitive information. But the tape drive is installed properly as the device manager does not show any error and ntbackup also recognizes it. I cant seem to figure out why SQL server 2000 cannot recognize it. It would be very helpful if you could kindly guide me on this issue.

Thanking you

Regards

Lavanya Janardhanan

There are two things that you can try here:

The first is to create a logical backup device for your tape device.

From Enterprise Manager, open the Query Analyzer and use the following command:

USE master EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'tape', 'tapedump1', '\\.\tape0'

Where tapedump1 is the logical name for your tape drive, and \\.\tape0 is the physical path to your tape drive. You should use values for these parameters as appropriate to your configuration. You should then be able to use the logical device as a destination for your backups.

Alternatively, you can specify the tape path explicitly in TSQL, again in Query Analyzer:

BACKUP DATABASE MyDatabase TO TAPE = '\\.\Tape0' WITH FORMAT, NAME = 'My Backup Name';

This technique can help to determine where the issue is with recognizing your tape device.
